BUSINESS: Medina's Dollar Tree will soon close its doors

In the next few months, Medina will be losing another of its businesses. The Dollar Tree, 11190 Maple Ridge Road, will soon be closing its doors, said Dollar Tree spokeswoman Shelly Davis.

“We do close stores from time to time,” Davis said. “On average, 60 a year.”

Davis attributed the closing to the square footage the business takes up. She said that when the Dollar Tree Co. first opened 20 years ago, it was common to have stores be 3,000, 4,000, or 5,000 square feet. When the Dollar Tree opens stores now, Davis said that the average store is 11,000 square feet.

“This particular store is an older store,” Davis said of the 3,000-square-foot Medina Dollar Tree. “It’s what we call a legacy store. It’s a little bit smaller then what we are currently opening,”

Although the exact date of closing is not known, Davis said it will be happening over the next few months. She also said that the Dollar Tree corporate office is always looking to see where they can open next.

“So you never know,” she said.

After closing, the closest Dollar Trees will be at 5770 S. Transit Road, Lockport, or 419 W. Main St., Batavia.

Residents around Medina are upset about the closing of another business.

“This is sad,” said resident Nicholas Rich. “Little towns across the country are suffering. These are jobs we’re losing. Jobs we really need.”

For resident Phyllis Winters, the closing will be sad because she could go in and spend little money on a lot of items. She said that it is nice to go to a store where things only cost a dollar.

“I’m pretty sad,” said resident Dora Davis. “A lot of people go there for the little things they need. Everything’s a dollar. How easy can you get.”

All three residents said that when the Dollar Tree officially closes, they will have to take their business across the street to the Dollar General.
