Orleans Vets came up with the defense in the eighth inning and the offense in the ninth to defeat Mark’s Pizzeria 8-5 this past week in the opening game of the Medina Men’s Softball League Division 2 playoff title series.
Shortstop Roger Furmanski snagged a liner triggering a huge double play to help get Orleans Vets out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth inning. Mark’s had loaded the bases on double by Geeg Hodgins, a single by Rich McAdoo and an intentional walk. Furmanski then fielded another liner for the third out.
Keeping the momentum, Orleans Vets then scored three runs in the ninth to claim the victory as a lead off double by Josh Bowman followed by a double by Greg Bennett plated the game winning run. Hits by Gary Kent and winning pitcher LLoyd Wright along with an error and a sacrifce fly by Nate Johnson helped to plate two insurance runs
Wright then retired Mark’s in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Aaron Kent had three hits on the night for Orleans Vets including a double.
Hodgins had three hits, including a pair of doubles, for Mark’s. Rich McAdoo, Marty Sanders and Jake McAdoo each added two hits. Jake McAdoo’s hits included a double.
The second and deciding title round contest will be played at 6:15 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart.
Earlier in the playoffs, Orleans Vets defeated Jr. Wilson 23-10 and 18-5 but lost to Mark’s 8-2.
