Last fall’s return to varsity football competition after a year’s absence proved to be a long one for Holley as the Hawks struggled through an 0-8 learning campaign.
Now, led by a key group of veterans from that squad, the Hawks look to begin rebounding in the Genesee Region league opener at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Barker.
“We’re looking to be competitive in every game and I think we have the ability to do that,” coach Chad DeRock said. “They’ve worked very hard in the off season. This is the strongest team we’ve had and definitely the most dedicated.”
Senior quarterback Guy Hills leads the offense for the Hawks which also return seniors Mike Pernicano, Sean Baylor and junior Cotter Winter at running back, juniors Chad Barhydt and John Penna at the receiver spots along with seniors Cory Blood, Mark Underwood and Carmelo Rivera on the line.
Rivera and Underwood at linebacker along with Pernicano and junior Evan Braddock in the secondary will help anchor the Hawks defense.
“We’ve got a nice mix of juniors and seniors,” DeRock said.
Barker is led by the senior contingent of Cody Blackley (offensive and defensive line), Ethan Dewart (quarterback/safety), Josh DuBois (wide receiver/defensive back), Josh Jackson (center/linebacker), Josh Sonberg (offensive line/linebacker) and Tyler Mason (running back/linebacker).
“Our motto is stay healthy,” Raiders coach Bill Bruning said. “The keys for us are to protect the football and control the line of scrimmage.”
Holley’s home opener will be Sept. 12 against Oakfield-Alabama.
