Looking for a way to help a family in need, Orleans Ford Mercury will host a bike rally to benefit Rowena Youngs.
Sales Manager Jim Poler said that Orleans Ford Mercury wanted a way to give back to the community because it has been a decent year as far as sales. He said that they wanted to hold an event that was different and decided to hold a bike rally.
The benefit will be held from
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and feature raffles, 50/50 drawings, food from Zambistros and $200 cash prizes for best antique bike, best custom bike and best paint job. The day will also feature a meet and greet with professional dirt track rider No. 97 RJ Overholt.
Customer Relations Manager Audrey Woodruff said that in the past Orleans Ford Mercury has worked with Community Action of Orleans and Genesee at Christmas time to adopt several families. They turned to Community Action’s emergency services coordinator Joni Dix to help them find a family that was in need.
“We want to do what we can to give back,” Woodruff said. “Community Action is a great organization.”
When Dix learned of the fundraiser one family came to mind: The Youngs. Rowena is the single mother of five adopted children. She served in the Army and was a nurse for many years. Dix said that the Albion residents adopted the children — even when they had health issues.
“Rowena has done a lot to serve this country and the community,” Dix said.
Three years ago, Rowena was diagnosed with interstitial pneumonitis, a lung disease that has disabled her. The disease has left her unable to climb stairs or walk distances. It has also left her eldest daughter to support the family.
Woodruff said that the benefit will help with the cost of adding a shower to her downstairs bathroom.
“It’s really hard to comprehend that so many people want to help,” Rowena said. “It’s a miracle.”
Those interested in participating in the rally and bring a motorcycle can show up the day of the event, said Poler. He and Woodruff also urged that the benefit has something for everyone.
“You don’t have to have a bike to come,” Poler said. “It’s not about that. It’s a fundraiser for this woman and her family.”
