Medina Journal-Register — Two Democrats seeking to represent Orleans County in Albany and Washington touted endorsements from various organizations Thursday.
Rep. Kathy Hochul (D-Hamburg) announced that she has received the backing of the National Association of Police Organizations in her re-election race against former Erie County Executive Chris Collins. NAPO is a national coalition of police unions and associations representing 241,000 law enforcement officers.
Hochul cited her work on the House Committee on Homeland Security and support for a national Blue Alert communications network, which would disseminate information when a law enforcement officer is seriously injured or killed in the line of duty, as key parts of her recording supporting police in Congress.
“I will continue to work on behalf of Western New York’s law enforcement officers to protect their rights, safety, and security just as they do for our communities every day,” Hochul said.
State Senate candidate Amy Hope Witryol (D-Lewiston) received endorsements this week from the Sierra Club’s Atlantic Chapter and the Western New York Council of the Communications Workers of America in her campaign against State Sen. George Maziarz.
Sierra Club Niagara chairman Lynda Schneekloth cited Witryol’s role as an environmental advocate and career in finance as reasons to back her campaign.
“Amy’s background ... puts her in a unique position to help shape economic development in Western New York that is both fiscally responsible and environmentally sound.” Schneekloth said. “New York is on the verge of a renewable energy revolution and we need leaders in the senate who understand that long term economic recovery cannot be built upon failed policies of the past. Amy Witryol deserves the chance to lead our great state toward that hopeful future.”
Witryol said she was honored to receive the CWA’s confidence. The union represents more than 700,000 members in the telecommunications, manufacturing, customer service and health care fields.
“For too long, Albany has provided tax subsidies to big campaign donors that ship jobs overseas,” Witryol said. “I look forward to working with Governor Cuomo to reform the election system and create good U.S. jobs right here in Western New York.”
