Thanks all around for a Grand Olde Tyme

Medina Journal-Register — MEDINA — The holiday season is now in full-force, but the group tasked with planning Medina’s Christmastime kick-off is already looking toward next year’s Olde Tyme Christmas.

And despite the cold, blustery weather putting a chill in the Nov. 24 event, the event’s organizers are pleased with this year’s celebration and the growth of the annual event. It couldn’t have been done with a supportive community and village, Event Chair Lisa Trippensee said.

“I want to give a huge thanks to everyone who came, brought their families and are staying here for Thanksgiving,” Trippensee said. “The bad weather came back, but this is becoming a real tradition.”

More than 10,000 people are estimated to have made their way downtown during the all-day event. Tripensee wasn’t one of them. She fell ill the week of the event, which put extra pressure on the committee. They stepped up.

“They busted their behinds on the behind-the-scenes stuff,” Trippensee said. “The committee pulled the event together.”

Extra work was also put in by the village’s department of public works, who Trippensee thanked for making sure the streets were in tip-top shape across the village; police department, who made sure the event and its parades went smoothly; and fire department, who provided safety assistance.

“They helped all day,” Trippensee said.

Even the winds helped out, bringing more attention to the downtown businesses hosting events, offering special deals or even a hot meal.

“It was good in that people went into the stores more than in the past,” Trippesensee said. “The restaurants were packed. We’ll be added more food vendors next year because they hit their capacities.”

The Olde Tyme Christmas Committee will meet next month to wrap up the financials for this year’s event and discuss areas to improve in 2013. Trippensee said one early plan is to bring in an attraction that turns a tractor trailer into a portable carnival.
