MEDINA —
For the wine enthusiasts that did not get their fill earlier this month at Wine About Winter, one local eatery is adding an attractive dimension to their menu.
The Shirt Factory Cafe, which hosted a wine and cheese reception Saturday after the SUNY Fredonia School of Music Trombone Choir’s performance, will start regularly serving local wines later this week.
“We want a very social experience,” Shirt Factory owner Andrew Meier said. “We have a great vibe her at night and think the wine bar will compliment our special events.”
The cafe’s wine bar will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, with a special menu of tapas — shared plates of appetizers.
Tina Zunner, who is one half of the team running the wine bar, served up wine at the reception with her husband Kyle, a Navy veteran. She said the cafe is aiming for a “young, sophisticated crowd.”
Building the wine bar required studying and a lot of sipping. “We did research on etiquette and the wines,” Zunner said. “We tasted a wide variety so that we can provide exactly what the customer wants.”
For now, the selection is made up of wines from Leonard Oakes Estates in Lyndonville and beers from small breweries from across New York, including Java Head, a stout flavored with espresso. Zunner said the focus will remain local.
“We’re going to stick to the Niagara Wine Trail area,” Zunner said. “It’s nice, wineries want to be a part of our wine bar.”
According to Meier, $10 pre-sale tickets for the grand opening, scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, are limited — more than half of the 70 have been sold. The event will feature music from Full Swing Sound, a jazz band.
