After graduating top in his class, Torry Tooley is the newest addition to the Medina Police Department.
On Friday, Tooley graduated from the Rural Police Training Academy at Genesee Community College. He was ranked No. 1 in his class overall, first in physical fitness and second in firearms training.
“It’s quite an achievement,” said Medina Police Chief Jose Avila.
Tooley first began at the academy in April 2009. He attended 16 hours a week of training until January, when he then completed 165 hours of on-the-job training in Medina.
Tooley is now a part-time officer with the Medina department. He said that since the age of 17, when he went on a ride-along, he knew this was the field he wanted to go into. Tooley received a bachelor’s degree from the state University at Brockport and completed his civil service test.
Tooley said that he has learned a lot over the past year and looks forward to continuing with the department.
Twenty-one recruits graduated in the Batavia ceremony. The keynote speaker was state Sen. Catharine Young, R-Olean.
