Lyndonville may spruce up for holidays

Medina Journal-Register — LYNDONVILLE — In the warmer months of the calendar year the Village of Lyndonville hosts a variety of events and has its main drag lined with floral touches. But when the temperatures drop and the snow falls, however, the village enters a pretty uneventful time.

Monday night one citizen pitched an idea to the village board that could change that, provided it was modified to fit Lyndonville’s needs.

The idea is based off a program already in place in Oakfield, Wes Bradley explained. If the village were to move forward, the program would involve the village providing space for residents to put up and decorate Christmas trees during the holiday season. Then, once all the trees are decorated, an evening event to be named would be chosen to light them all at once.

Bradley, a member of the Yates Town Board, assured the Lyndonville board that the people in Oakfield would consider it flattery if their idea was adopted in other communities. He said Oakfield’s event, known as Majestic Lights in the Park, has grown to include over 50 trees.

The program, Bradley continued, would need to have a sign-up deadline to allow the village time to allot enough space. It could also include organizations as well as individuals, and trees could also be decorated in memory of people, too.

“I think it would be tremendous if we could do something like that here in the middle of our village,” Bradley said. He added that it would be a way to boost community morale.

Mayor Stephen McAvoy agreed with Bradley’s assessment that the idea was worth exploring.

“I would really like to see some things done here during our ‘offseason’,”

he stated.
