Sandstone Society honors Bank of Castile

Medina Journal-Register — MEDINA — The use of the treasured Medina Sandstone is the trademark element in many of the village’s spectacular structures.

While many of the prime examples of the prized native stone’s use are in historic buildings, one of Medina’s newest commercial buildings is carrying on that tradition in a show of community pride.

The Medina Sandstone Society issued a special citation Friday to the Bank of Castile for “its wisdom and civic courtesy” in choosing to use the historic stone in the bank’s new Main Street offices.

The architecture of the new bank office includes the use of locally-quarried stone in the accents and quoins of the building’s cornerstones. The Sandstone Society praised the bank’s use of “perfectly cut examples” of the stone that made Medina famous.

“They used genuine Medina Sandstone,” said Medina Sandstone Society President Bob Waters. “That’s the first time that has happened in a long time and we were so impressed. This honor is certainly deserved.”

Waters and directors from the sandstone society presented Medina Branch Manager Patrick Weissend with a plaque thanking the bank for making a special use of the stone.

Weissend said there was no better way for the bank to symbolize its place in the community than the use of sandstone. The new branch opened in November.

“It’s very important that as a community bank we have to be part of the community,” Weissend said. “Medina Sandstone is world famous and it was the perfect fit for us.”

The Sandstone Society’s has placed five plaques or stone tablets at local sites as part of the not-for-profit’s ongoing mission to promote the village’s heritage. The group announced plans in January to honor both the Bank of Castile and the Medina Savings & Loan, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary, this year.
