Residential improvement grant announced

Medina Journal-Register — MEDINA — A new pilot program will offer matching grants to village residents and business owners looking to make positive investments to the exteriors of their buildings.

The Orleans County Chamber of Commerce is administering the privately-funded grant. Chamber Director Kathy Blackburn said the non-governmental nature of the $200,000 grant would allow a much wider field of applicants, benefiting groups that are often unable to apply for grant funding.

Any resident or property owner in the village is eligible for up to $20,000 in 50/50 matching grants for the fixing up of windows, roofs, siding and facades of Medina buildings. There is no income requirement, with a team of financial and building trades professionals to judge applications more on the feasibility of the work than other considerations.

“Residents usually don’t get this kind of opportunity,” Blackburn said.“ This is an unusual opportunity for residents and businesses to upgrade their properties and show pride in their community.”

The purpose of the grant is to enhance properties in Medina for prospective new buyers or businesses who may consider locating here, Blackburn said.

“It can go towards fixing up buildings ... anything to make Medina appeal to newcomers.”

Medina is the first pilot community to benefit from this grant, and Blackburn is hopeful it may be available to other Orleans County towns in the future. Applications will be available at the Chamber’s 102 N. Main St., Albion office and at www.orleanscountychamber.com next month, Blackburn said.
