ALBION —
Community Action of Orleans and Genesee completed its annual back to school drive Thursday, helping more than 200 children get supplies.
Community Action made stops in Lyndonville, Medina, Albion and Holley to hand out backpacks, giving items to 90 low-income households in all five Orleans County school districts.
“We ran out of backpacks and supplies quickly,” said Deb Whittier. “Many community members depend on getting help with supplies.”
Whittier said that with a lot of people out of work, families can’t afford to buy their children all the supplies required by the school.
Randi Lang said she was “shocked” at the amount of people lining up, waiting to get a backpack when they first began handing out supplies.
“Hopefully in the future we can get more donations and we can help more kids,” she said.
Backpacks were donated by the Salvation Army and supplies were provided by the Oak Orchard Assembly of God, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Habitat for Humanity and several anonymous donors. Supplies included crayons, markers, pens, pencils, notebooks, folders and glue sticks.
Both Lang and Whittier said that although the supplies provided are not all of what a child needs to start school, it is a good start.
“There is definitely a need in the community for a program like this,” said Whittier.
