LYNDONVILLE: Students take notes on Indian music

Staff Reports

LYNDONVILLE — Sharing his experiences and talent, international artist Sandip Burman visited Lyndonville schools Wednesday for a master class. Burman, who specializes in Indian music, grew up in Durgapur, India, and has traveled around the world playing and talking about his music.

Lyndonville teacher David Stacey said Burman has been touring a small portion of the state, visiting schools. Stacey said that to prepare his students, he taught the group of fifth- through 12th-graders more about music from India.

“There is a lot of unique things we do,” Burman told the students. He said there’s a lot of freedom in his music.

Burman, who is known for playing a tabla, an Indian hand drum, demonstrated how to play a sitar, harmonium and tabla. Students then got to interact with Burman, learning more about him and what he does.
