Medina village officials released the name of the Department of Public Works employee who died Wednesday morning after a 25-foot fall in Boxwood Cemetery on North Gravel Road.

Michael Russo, 47, of Medina was pronounced dead at the scene after plunging from the bucket truck he was working from.

Police Chief Jose Avila said an investigation by his department in conjunction with the Department of Labor will continue.

“There was a failure in the mechanism that holds the bucket, which caused the bucket to overturn,” Avila said. “What we’re trying to determine is was that failure caused by the bucket hitting the tree or was it caused by something else? The scene was examined by my department, the Department of Labor and the Orleans County Department of Health.”

Russo died from injuries he suffered after colling with a tree that he had been trimming.

“His impact was with the tree, not with the ground,” Avila said.

Calls to the Department of Public Works were not returned Thursday.
