GETTING FIT: Community Partners debuting new wellness center on West Avenue

Community Partners lives to keep young and old healthy.

“I always tell people, ‘My job is keeping you healthy and out of the hospital,’ ” Wellness Director Cindy Perry said. “We work with everyone from babies to senior citizens and everyone in between.”

Community Partners recently moved its Wellness Center to West Avenue from smaller quarters on North Academy Street. It’s the organization’s fourth home as Community Partners expands again to reach more people.

“Now we’re walking distance for the downtown community,” Perry said. “It’s nice to have this space available for all of our classes (and) also for organizations that we partner with.”

With its move, the Wellness Center is launching some new programs, including “Hip-2-be-fit” in March. It’s a series of courses to teach children the importance of healthy eating and exercise.

“It is going to be a fun program for kids, so it will be more integrating fun into fitness,” Health and Fitness Coordinator Nicole Helsdon said. “They’re actually going to learn week to week how to read labels and make healthier choices, how to read the food guide pyramid and they’re going to keep their own journal.”

Hip-2-be-fit is geared toward 8- to 12-year-olds who aren’t involved in sports and other activities. Childhood obesity rates are on the rise, so the program aims to teach kids about nutrition and fitness before problems start, Helsdon said.

Community Partners was formed in 1993 as a prenatal care assistance program in a building behind Medina Memorial Hospital. Since then, Perry said, she has seen a big need in the community for health education services.

To meet the need, every month the organization is promoting a different service. This month the focus is on heart health and free blood pressure screenings are being offered.

The Wellness Center will have an open house March 8 to re-introduce itself in the community. Massage therapist Gary Condoluci will be giving chair massages, and every half-hour there will be a drawing for services such as cholesterol screenings, personal wellness profiles, yoga/Pilates sessions and a 50-minute Swedish massage by Condoluci.

“We’ve been getting pictures of all the programs because people may not know what we offer,” Perry said. “We’re going to try to put them together in a power point presentation to run during the open house.”
