Thomas the Tank Engine pulled into the station several times over the weekend at the Medina railroad Museum, where children spent their days riding the train, getting their faces painted and running through a winding maze among many other fun activities.
“Thomas is a big draw for the kids,” Medina Railroad Museum Promotions Director Linda Klein said. “Every child gets a junior engineer certificate as they get off the train.”
Throughout the “Day out with Thomas” activities, Klein estimated about 20,000 people would descend upon Medina and the area is blocked off for Thomas, food vendors, Imagination Station and hanging out with Sir Topham Hatt.
While toddlers to teenagers wandered around waiting for their turn to ride Thomas, Erin Hall, 5, and her brother, Ryan, 4, of North Tonawanda took time to get out of the sun for a little bit and have their faces painted after they pulled back into the train station.
“Thomas drives backward and forward and he likes to blow his whistle,” Erin said. “I sat on (coach car) Annie.”
Marc and Kathy Hall of North Tonawanda have been bringing their children to see Thomas for the last three years that he’s made an appearance at the Medina Railroad Museum. For the little ones, their world revolves around Thomas and his friends, Marc said.
“Last year we had to throw them over our shoulders after five hours,” Kathy said.
“We’re basically here all day and we both work so it’s something to do together as a family.”
Drue Hamlin, 3, of Canandaigua was excited to be able to spend her day with her mother and father at the event and gave a thumbs up when asked if she liked her ride on the famous blue tank engine.
This was Drue’s first time seeing Thomas, but if she’s still interested in all the things that Thomas does when the event rolls around next year, Chantel Hamlin said the family plans to come back again.
“It is so cute, this is so great for her,” Chantel said. “All the kids are excited. Their highlight is to see him.”

Market on Main will offer fresh produce, baked goods

Lyndonville BoE approves budget propositions

The estimated property tax rate is $18.40, an increase of 1.38 percent and a bump of a quarter for every $1,000 of assessed property value.
