A worker at the Holley sewage treatment plant was treated and released for exposure to fumes from a leaking chlorine gas vessel early Friday morning.
The plant employee entered the building to work and was overcome by an unknown substance. The man was able to remove himself from the building and call 911.
The Holley Fire Department responded to the 911 call, and emergency crews arrived on the scene shortly after 8:50 a.m.
The worker was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and later released.
Several fire personnel were treated at the scene for heat-related illnesses. Two were transported to Lakeside Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released.
Holley Fire Chief Roland D. Nenni III said responders found the incident extremely difficult, due to the high heat and humidity.
The leak was contained to the building and no product left the site, officials said. The area around the building was monitored during and after the incident. No chemicals or toxics were found.
Participating in an evaluation to determine the source of the substance were: Holley Fire, Monroe Ambulance, and several surrounding fire and emergency service agencies, including the Kodak Fire Department Haz-Mat Team, the Monroe County Fire Bureau Haz-Mat Team and the Orleans County Special Response Team. The incident is under investigation.
