Albion’s Swan Library, 4 North Main St., is presenting a display of artwork by George A. Fleshman through the end of the month.
The display includes artwork in a variety of mediums, from watercolor to sculpture.
Born in West Virginia, Fleshman began painting at age 5 and hasn’t stopped since. Art materials were scarce when he was a youngster, so he painted on rocks and carved on trees in the woods near his home, he said. Often, he used whatever materials he had on hand to express himself.
A self-taught artist, Fleshman has never taken an art class or lesson. Seldom does he sketch before painting. The subject simply flows from his mind, to his hand, to create beautiful artwork. He works with both watercolors and oils, and loves also to sculpt with clay and hand-carve wood.
Recently retired from Kodak, Fleshman is now able to spend more time creating new and unique works of art.
“I can’t stop. Painting is an obsession and always has been,” he said. “I have to do it or I’m miserable.”
Pieces on display include: “The High Rod Mill,” a watercolor, Super Sculpy works titled “Where God Lives,” and “Etta Twigi,” a detailed sculpture of a woman in a rocker (pictured).
There is also “Birth of Chief Red Cloud,” a watercolor on canvas, and an oil painting, “Mason Covered Bridge.”
