ALBION — The week-long Cultural Diversity celebration at Albion Central School is “off to a great start,” said event coordinator Theresa Christopher. This is the second annual Cultural Diversity Week the school has sponsored.
This year, the event includes Native American and Amish cultures. It also includes presentations and performances by groups from Ireland, Argentina, Japan and Mexico.
During the week, each of the districts’ three schools hosts a variety of presentations focusing on a specific culture.
Teachers in each building may choose which activities they would like their classes to attend and which cultures they will include in their lesson plan.
It is truly an explorative journey the whole district embraces.
Even the food service workers get involved by planning menus around the events. On Saint Patrick’s Day, students enjoyed the Celtic Music Society, a student group from East Rochester that performed a variety of Irish music.
The week-long celebration culminates on Saturday with Community Cultural Diversity Day. The celebration includes performances by the Celtic Music Society, Drumcliffe School of Irish Dance, McMahon School of Irish Dance and the Haudenosaunee (Seneca) Nation.
There will also be activities, crafts and workshops on music and dancing.
The event is free to the public and will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Albion Middle School, 254 East Ave.
Elementary school students must be accompanied by an adult.
