ALBION — The sound of phones ringing filled the Albion Village Hall on Friday, as word spread about Mayor Michael Hadick resigning from office.
Hadick took a plea in Albion Town Court in which he agreed to resign his position and pay restitution in exchange for dropping charges of petit larceny and official misconduct, said District Attorney Joseph Cardone.
Hadick, who had been set to go to trial on Monday, could have faced a maximum sentence of one year in jail if found guilty.
Hadick was arrested Oct. 10 by state police, who said he failed to turn over proceeds from a fundraiser the village held to defray the cost of the July 4 fireworks display. Hadick deposited $882.50 in his personal bank account after the display and showed receipts for expenses he paid totaling $536.64. He paid $346.86 to the village Friday in restitution.
“It’s been a shock,” said acting village mayor Kevin Sheehan. He said the board knew that if found guilty, Hadick would be removed from office, but didn’t plan on this happening.
Sheehan said that in a resignation letter Hadick wrote to Village Clerk Linda Babcock, Hadick said he had been forced out of office, which Sheehan said was “absolutely not true.”
Sheehan said the remaining four trustees have some decisions to make on whether to appoint a new mayor or run the village without one for the next 10 months.
“I think we should have a mayor,” Sheehan said of their options. He said that he would be happy to have any one of the four trustees appointed as mayor.
“We’re going to run the village very efficiently and very effectively,” Sheehan said. “We are four very dedicated, very hard-working people.”
