May marks Community Action Month for Community Action of Orleans and Genesee and many events have been planned to honor, recognize and educate the community and people involved with the organization.
“It’s an opportunity to showcase what we do and get the word out,” said Ed Fancher, executive director of Community Action.
Fancher said that many activities have and will be held to highlight what Community Action does. He said that today, a luncheon will be held recognizing a number of customers of the agency. The luncheon is a highlight of the year, Fancher said and many customers will tell how Community Action has helped them.
On Thursday, in conjunction with the national nursing home week, members of
Community Action participated in elderly afternoons. The group visited three nursing homes where they brought Carnation flowers to the women and cards, made by Girl Scout Troop no. 2258, to the men.
“We wanted to not forget people in nursing homes,” said Emergency Services Coordinator Joni Dix. “It’s such a heartwarming experience. Just a simple flower brings a smile to their faces.”
Other activities that make up Community Action month include members of county legislature serving lunch at the soup kitchen in Holley on May 28, and Assemblyman Stephen Hawley, R-Batavia, serving lunch on May 29. There will also be a bus tour of the Community Action facility at 9 a.m. May 29. Fancher said that the tour is a way for people to find out more about the agency and see what they do.
