After several planning sessions, the Village of Albion Downtown Beautification Project began May 15. Kicking off the event were Albion Main Street Alliance, Albion Central School District, Orleans County Master Gardeners and village trustees.
For fifth-grade science day, Master Gardeners worked with five classes of fifth graders to fill stationary planters that will beautify the village’s historic downtown. The Master Gardeners participating are Richard Monica, Linda Farnsworth, Carmelita England and Judy Koehler.
The volunteers filled 18 planters with supertunias, geraniums, dusty Miller, marigold and coleus. They were placed in the area of the Olde Erie Canal Festival on May 24. After that, they will be moved to the front of the businesses that have sponsored them.
Three volunteers planted the gardens at the village signs indicating the Village of Albion Historic District and next, the garden in Waterman Park will be planted.
The final phase involved planting the hanging baskets and any more sponsored stationary planters on May 29 for high school activity day. More students worked with Master Gardeners to create the baskets. Depending on the weather, the Village of Albion Department of Public Works will hang the baskets donated by Bertsch’s Good Earth Market, Kirby’s Farm Market, Navarra’s Greenhouses and B & C Christ Farms.
