Genesee Community College President Stuart Steiner received the friends of education award at Monday’s Albion school board meeting.

“This is one of our more prominent partners that we have in the school district,” Superintendent Ada Grabowski said. “We’re thrilled we have such a strong partner in higher education.”

Grabowski said that Steiner and GCC have helped students learn that they can earn both high school and college credits while in school. Steiner has also helped with the dual credit enrollment and offers two free classes to any seniors to give them a taste of higher learning

GCC will also soon provide a counselor to Albion to help students with their college application process and help them explore different career fields.

Steiner told the school board that he finds it to be a real loss when good students do not go on to college. He hopes that by giving students the free classes, they will be encouraged to get more involved in education and get the experience that may help them take the next step and go to college.
