Showing off their moves, many kids — each with a different level of skill — flocked to Butts Park Saturday for the sixth annual substance-free skate jam.
“We love to have it every year,” said Patricia Crowley, assistant prevention director of Genesee/Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Inc. “It’s a free, fun, family event.”
The event was held again this year in coordination of the Lions Club community yard sale. The skate jam featured the Phatman Skate Team of Tonawanda, which includes Medina residents. Members of the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department were at the event, making children IDs. The Village of Medina Police Department handed out information.
“We like to go to the events and pass out prevention flyers,” said Police Chief Jose Avila.
Since the event stresses the wearing of helmets and safety, Avila said he likes to promote wearing helmets in the village and being safe.
Besides getting to skate, children in attendance got free pizza and bottled water, face painting and other games. Five skate boards were also given away as prizes.
“We hope to continue having it with everybody’s support,” Crowley said.
This year’s skate jam was supported by GCASA, Orleans United, the ACT Program, MAAC, Reality Check, Village of Medina, Smoke Free Now, Albion Wal-Mart and Medina Tops.
