For five years, people have been coming to Wildwood Lake Family Campground for weekend trips, outdoor experiences and summer vacation. Bringing tourists into the county, Rob and Rachel Kaiser have taken several steps to try and make their campground even better.
Wildwood now has the added attraction of becoming one of 460 Kampground Of Americas across the United States, Canada and Mexico. It is the 13th in New York state.
“Orleans County will now have a larger national exposure,” Rob said.
The Kaisers have been working hard to make their campground a destination the entire family would like to visit, and they believe the KOA designation adds to the camping experience.
The campground will soon be listed in the KOA directory, which is distributed around the country.
Since they first opened the campground, the couple has had a goal to expand tourism and make Orleans County a tourist destination. Over the past few years, the number of campers coming to Orleans County has increased. The Kaisers hope that now — given the standard people expect when they see the KOA sign — more and more will come to the area.
“We want to increase the traffic in the spring, fall and on weekdays,” Rachel said. “Having a national name will help with that.”
In addition to the new designation, Wildwood has recently added a new pool, game room, three new cabins on Jeddo Creek and a new RV.
“This is huge for us,” Rob said. “It’s a big impact with tourism in the county.”
Another addition will be that the campground is now Wi-Fi accessible. Reservations also can now be made online. Rob said that technology is a big thing with the KOA company, and Wildwood will also be able to help campers continue planning their vacation and find the next KOA site on their journey.
Wildwood Lake Family Campground switched to a KOA on May 4. On Monday, they will officially go online, allowing people to make reservations.

Albion tries to figure out Albany's intent
The imposition of a property tax cap is forcing the Albion Central School District to make budget changes, but Superintendent Michael Bonnewell says the issue is due more to an unknown procedure than the levy requirements.
Albion has held tax rates level or lower in recent years. The district is still working to determine where the levy will land, but they expect to slide well below the state-set ceiling for property tax levy increases.
The challenge Albion faces, Bonnewell said, is correctly deciphering the state’s intentions and avoiding penalties if they guess wrong. -
Wine About Winter ramping up
Downtown Medina Businesses will once again be opening their doors and popping corks to celebrate Wine About Winter, which returns for a third year from 2 to 7 p.m. Feb. 4.
More than 30 businesses will participate in the Medina Business Association event, which gives patrons a wine glass and a map of local businesses hosting wine tastings and special offers. -
