When in Albion, before buying that case of beer, take a look at the bright orange sticker on the box.
The “sticker shock” program is supposed to get your attention and prevent underage drinking. The message is to remind store clerks and other adults that the drinking age is 21 in New York state.
The program is sponsored by the Orleans United Coalition to stop underage drinking and drug use. Many gathered Tuesday to place the orange stickers on alcohol at local stores. Participating were the Albion Police Explorers and members of the Genesee/Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse.
“We’re doing it to promote a safe graduation season and graduation parties,” said Drug-Free Communities Coordinator Kaitlin Smith.
Smith said that this program was also done in Medina and Holley earlier this year. The program is one that the coalition would like to do in all five Orleans County school districts every fall and spring.
More than 5,500 stickers were placed at nine out of the 11 retailers in Albion. Retailers included K&K;, Creekside, Barre Deli Plus, Rite-Aid, Tops, Save-On Beverage Center, Yellow Goose Market, JP’s Market and Narbys Superette.
“This is the prime time of year with graduations and proms,” said Police Explorers adviser Perrin London. “This is something the Explorers should be promoting.”
