The Gaines Basin Road Canal Bridge will be closed beginning today and remaining closed until summer 2010, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The bridge, owned and maintained by the state Department of Transportation, is receiving a scheduled rehabilitation.
The projected cost of the project is $1.1 million. Local traffic will be able to cross the canal at the Eagle Harbor Canal Bridge, which has an 18-ton weight limit; Route 98 Canal Bridge in Albion, which has a six-ton weight limit or Ingersoll Strett Bridge in Albion. Brown Street Bridge in Albion — a single lane bridge will also be available, as will Densmore Road Bridge and Transit Road Bridge.
Commercial vehicle operators are advised to contact the state Department of Transportation for information on commercial vehicle crossings.
The Keitel Road canal bridge is expected to re-open in August 2009.
