Staff Reports
Two area residents have been charged in connection with a accident in the Town of Barre last year that claimed the life of a child.
Abagail Buzard, 8, was fatally injured when she was thrown from the car she was riding in and pinned beneath the wreckage.
Her father, Corey Buzard, 33, of Holley, and her cousin, Courtney Buzard, 17, of Brockport, who was driving, have each been charged with one count of criminally negligent homicide, according to state police in Albion.
At about 10 p.m. Sept. 4, Courtney Buzard was driving south on Oak Orchard Road in a 1998 GMC Jimmy when she reportedly lost control of the vehicle, rolling it over and down an embankment into an irrigation ditch.
Abagail Buzard was taken to United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, where she was pronounced dead.
Several other passengers were hospitalized with minor injuries, according to reports.
Orleans County District Attorney Joseph Cardone said it took five months for the arrests to come about because the matter was under investigation. The case has gone before a grand jury, he said.
Both suspects were arraigned before Orleans County Court Judge James P. Punch and released on their own recognizance. They are due back in court Monday.
