Medina Journal-Register — MEDINA — The students of Medina High School competed last week in a challenge that will benefit the Medina Area Association of Churches’ Christmastime efforts.
Students collected a variety of foods for the MAAC, putting them towards their favorite teacher’s count in the Canley Cup competition.
While the final results weren’t known Friday, it seems that math teacher Scott Benson has gamed out a winning strategy.
Sophomore Class Vice President Hallie Seaman, who along with Sophomore Class Treasurer Addison Zavitz counted the final donations Friday, said an organized effort netted him big points. Benson’s classes loaded up on the day when mac and cheese boxes were the item that scored double points.
“His calculus and pre-calculus classes raised money and bought (the mac and cheese) ... there’s more than 300 boxes,” Seaman said. “He has won a lot of years in a row.”
Many of the teachers vying for the top spot offered tasty rewards for students — parties in class, tickets for the monthly Mustang Mission raffles and knowledge that their efforts will help out in their communities.
MAAC is set to pick up the donations today. The MEdina Fire Department is also set to pick up the red barrels at local churches and businesses that MAAC uses to collect gifts for local children.
Financial donations can still be sent to the MAAC Christmas Fund at MAAC.
