Staff Reports
Holly Toal has joined the staff at The Journal-Register as city editor.
“I’m excited to work in this community,” said Toal. “I look forward to serving the people and places in this area.”
A Rochester-area native, Toal graduated from the State University College at Oneonta in 2005 with a degree in mass communication. During her time there, she worked in different areas of the media, as a news anchor at VENUE, the college television station; and as a DJ at 90.9 fm WONY, the college radio station, where she reviewed new artists for the music rotation.
“Aside from writing, listening to and discovering new music has always been a passion of mine,” she said.
Managing Editor Tim Marren said having Toal on board with her past newspaper experience makes her a proven asset.
“Holly comes from a background similar to what she’ll be handling in Medina. She’ll be able to call on past experiences
to improve the Journal-Register,” Marren said. “Our goal, but more importantly, her goal, will be to add even more local content to the newspaper through strong local reporting and building relationships with those in the community for more submissions of text and photos.”
Toal continued working in radio during an internship at Clear Channel Radio in Albany. As a member of the production department, she wrote, voiced and produced commercials and public service announcements.
After graduation, Toal spent some time in the Hudson Valley, most recently at a daily newspaper in Hudson. Starting out as a beat reporter, she later began learning page design and started editing the newspaper. Toal eventually moved up the ranks to weekend editor and then city editor.
“It’s great to return to Western New York after some time away,” she said. “I feel like I’m home.”
