Keeping the roads safe is the job of area police departments, as well as a goal of the AAA.
Medina, Holley and Middleport were in the winners’ circle Tuesday as AAA singled out those police departments it deemed the most successful in achieving their mutual goal of traffic safety.
The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office captured top honors with the Traffic Safety Gold Award; the silver went to Medina, Middleport and Lockport police departments; the bronze went to Holley and Barker police departments.
AAA regional Manager Lynette Dickinson handed out honors to police agencies from Niagara and Orleans counties at the organization’s annual award luncheon. The ceremony took place at the Basket Factory restaurant in Middleport.
Police agreed that awards come to those departments that stand out in their county by striving to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents and possible fatalities by teaching traffic safety.
“On a regular basis, we check the safety of driving habits,” said Middleport Police Chief John J. Swick.
