MEDINA: Youths taken into custody after property damage incidents
Two juveniles have been taken into custody following two property damage incidents in the Village of Medina earlier in the week.
Medina Police Chief Jose Avila said police officers received information about suspicious individuals in the area of the vacant Ames plaza on Route 31 around 1 p.m. Tuesday, where it was discovered that a window had been broken.
While the officers were conducting an investigation at the plaza, they were notified of another property damage incident at Sieck’s Wholesale, at the end of West Oak Orchard Street. There, two windows were also broken.
The total damage was estimated at about $2,000.
Upon further investigation, it was determined that the two suspects were ages 12 and 13. The two juveniles were interviewed and reportedly confessed to damaging both properties.
“It seems like juvenile crimes are on the rise,” said Avila. “This year, 40 percent of all crime in the village has been by children less than 18.”
The suspects were issued appearance tickets and referred to probation for juvenile intake. They were also both suspended from school.
One of the juveniles had been previously charged with property damage.
The Orleans County Probation Department assisted in the investigation.

District confirms leave of absence
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Department issued an appearance ticket Aug. 21, requiring a district administrator to appear in Batavia Town Court next month to answer a charge of driving while intoxicated.
