OH BABY: Lyndonville woman has hospital’s first baby of 2010
MEDINA — This New Year’s holiday brought people across the county — and the world — different reasons to celebrate, but in Medina, one young lady had one of the greatest reason for cheer.
Kreisandra Colon, 19, gave birth to Alexys Colon at 8:15 a.m. Jan. 2, 2010, at the TWIG Birthing Center at Medina Memorial Hospital. Alexys was the first baby born at the Medina hospital this year.
Weighing in at 6 pounds, 15.2 ounces and measuring 27 inches long, Alexys came into the world with a full head of blonde hair.
Kreisandra went through a natural delivery and was not able to have any pain medication because the baby’s heart rate was dropping during labor. Although the umbilical cord was initially wrapped around part of the baby’s body, Alexys was born without any major hiccups.
Kreisandra was told that her due date would be sometime around the first, second or third of the month, so the new mother knew it was a possibility that she could have the first baby of the new year at the hospital. However, she did not know until after she delivered that Alexys was, in fact, Medina’s “Baby New Year.”
“It’s pretty exciting,” she said about having delivered her baby during the holiday season.
Kreisandra grew up in Medina and now lives in Lyndonville. Family and friends were at her bedside in the hospital the day after she gave birth, to spend some time with the new mom and daughter.
“It’s awesome,” said grandmother Lynda Dayton (grandfather is Steve Colon) of seeing the newest addition to the family. “It’s just so exciting.”
Those who know Kreisandra were not the only ones who wanted to celebrate the occasion. Local businesses from throughout the village donated gift certificates, clothing, toys, diapers and other baby supplies for the hospital to give to the new mom.
Director of Foundation Operations Candy Schoenle presented Kreisandra and Alexys with the basket Sunday morning.
“It’s very special,” was how Schoenle described the event. “We spent a couple of weeks during the holiday season getting the basket together just for them.”
The mother and daughter are expected to head home from the hospital today.

Special gift pushes trust campaign over the top
The Sandstone Trust of Medina has exceeded its 2010 summer campaign goal on the strength of a very special memorial gift which was made public this week. The immediate family of the late Fern J. Blackburn (widow of Paul R. Blackburn) presented a major contribution to the Trust committee in an amount equaling 20 percent of the entire summer campaign goal of $25,000. With this support, the total of summer gifts stands today at approx. $27,000, leaders said.

District confirms leave of absence
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Department issued an appearance ticket Aug. 21, requiring a district administrator to appear in Batavia Town Court next month to answer a charge of driving while intoxicated. The Holley Central School District can confirm that the administrator has been on leave since Aug. 3, which includes the alleged time of the incident.
