Medina Journal-Register — MEDINA — The organizers of an encampment of American Civil War re-enactors at GCC Medina say the weekend of events is coming together nicely.
A full program of events is being scheduled for the April 26-28 encampment. GCC Medina Associate Dean Jim Simon said plans will be finalized in the next two weeks, but he’s already excited by what’s being proposed.
In addition to skirmishes between Union and Confederate soliders, Simon said demonstrations of camp life and Civil War-era battlefield medicine, a cotillion with fiddle music and dancers in 19th century dress. Re-eanctors of famous figures, genealogy workshops and historic displays from local settlers are also being organized.
”The core is there, now we’re filling out (the whole weekend),” said Simon, who joined a group of re-enactors Monday in scouting out the area behind the college where mock skirmishes will be held.
Former Mayor Adam Tabelski, who is the honorary chairman of the encampment, the event is coming together thanks to excellent assistance from the village government, its departments and groups like the Medina Business Association.
That includes logistical support and touches like putting period music on the the downtown sound system.
The major addition to come out the partnership is a parade of re-enactors through downtown Medina, which Tabelski said will start at St. Mary’s Church and head down Main Street before ending outside the Medina Senior Citizens Center.
”We wanted to focus on the downtown,” Tabelski said. “In 1861, the soldiers went down Main Street to the railroad depot before heading to Albany.”
While details of the parade are not set, Simon said that the initial plan is to have detachments of Confederate and Union soldiers between carriages and fife and drum bands. For a small part in a larger weekend, the parade offers one more thing to get locals excited.
”It’s a wonderful way to kickoff a great weekend,” Village Tourism Committee Chairman Jim Hancock proclaimed at Monday’s board meeting.
