Making a successful title defense, Lyndonville’s Sam Recco led a contingent of three Tigers to capture Section V Division II (small schools) crowns Saturday night at R.I.T earning trips to the upcoming state championships.
Sam Recco claimed the 120 lb. title while Tony Recco won at 99 and Brooks Boyle at 152. The Tigers also had Josh Brabon finish second at 138 and Alex Rodriguez third at 145.
“I told the guys before hand it was all about putting together a big tournament and they did,” Lyndonville coach Jim Zeliff said. “We got some big wins. The guys are really excited because this is the first time we’re sending more than one to the states.”
Holley also had a big weekend as the Hawks had the senior duo of Quinton Murphy and Kacee Sauer both repeat as Section V champions. The sectional title is the fifth for Murphy, who earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler honors, and the third for Sauer.
“I’m really happy for both of them,” Holley coach John Grillo said. “They both really epitomize what the Holley wrestling program is all about and it really shows that hard work does pay off.”
Holley also had Andrew Flanagan (99) place second and Mike Silvis (220) third.
Holley also captured the Division II team title garnering 166.5 points as Midlakes finished second with 157 and Warsaw third with 137.
Sam Recco blanked Jeff O’Lena of East Rochester 3-0 in the finals after also blanking Brian Hojnoski of Bath Haverling 5-0 in the semifinals.
Tony Recco decisoned Flanagan 3-1 in the title bout after besting Tyler Hamsher of Wayland-Cohocton by an identical 3-1 margin in the semis.
Boyle nipped Tyler Newton of Bolivar-Richburg 3-2 in the finals after downing Mat Gigliotti of North Rose-Wolcott in the semis.
Murphy decisioned Brabon 19-6 in the finals after decisioning Max Lloyd of Pal-Mac 19-7 in the semis.
Sauer pinned Riley Andrews of York in 1:30 in the semifinals and then edged past Dan Ognibene of Alexander 2-1 in the title bout.
Rodriguez decisioned Brian Galuski of North Rose-Wolcott 7-1 to earn third place honors as did Silvis with a 3-2 win over Andy Paro of Pal-Mac.
