MEDINA —
Leading from wire to wire, No. 6 seed Medina romped to a 42-23 victory over visiting No. 11 Lackawanna Tuesday to open the Section VI Class B-1 playoffs.
Maggie Balcerzak scored 12 points, Albanellys Perez and Tanisha Robinson eight each and Sharon Husung six to lead the balanced attack for Medina which improves to 12-6.
Abby Button led Medina on the boards with eight rebounds as Perez and Balcerzak each had five. Husung chipped in with four steals.
The Mustangs next visit No. 3 Tonawanda at 2 p.m. Saturday in the B-1 quarterfinals.
A three by Robinson along with two buckets by Perez and jumper by Balcerzak put Medina on top to stay by a 9-3 margin at the end of the first quarter.
Balcerzak got the hot hand in the second period with eight points on three jumpers and a lay-up and Husung and Button chipped in with three’s to help increase the Mustangs advantage to 15, 27-12, at the half.
“We came out a little slow in the first quarter but we picked it up and played better in the second quarter,” Medina coach Ken Haak said.
The Mustangs advantage soared to as much as 23, 35-12, midway through the third period after a three by Robinson and buckets by Perez and Balcerzak. Medina maintained a commanding 18 point, 35-17, advantage at the three-quarter mark.
“They hustled well,” Haak said. “It was a little sloppy but the effort was there.”
In addition to the Medina at Tonawanda game at 2 p.m. Saturday, No. 4 Albion will host No. 5 Cheektowaga in a Class A-2 quarterfinal and No. 2 Roy-Hart will host either No. 6 Gowanda or No. 11 Fredonia in a Class B-2 quarterfinal at that same time.
