High powered offense set tone for Mustangs

Medina Journal-Register — Scoring points proved to be no problem this season for Medina as the Mustangs averaged 38 per outing in route to posting a 6-3 record.

Sophomore quarterback Jason Hellwig who directed the Medina attack completed 83 of 152 passes for 1,450 yards and 16 touchdowns, which ranks second on the Mustangs all time single season list behind the 18 thrown by Levi Pace in 2008.

Lonnie Taylor led the Medina receiving corps with 36 catches for 750 yards and nine touchdowns. Kyle Barna hauled in 17 receptions for 306 yards and four touchdowns, Ben Austin 11 for 273 and three touchdowns and Danny Barnes 12 for 152 and two touchdowns.

Jake Cotriss finished as the Mustangs leading ball carrier with 850 yards rushing as Barna picked up 356.

“We had a lot of kids fill a lot of roles and it truly was a team effort,” Medina head coach Eric Valley said. “And we really got great senior leadership.”

Barna emerged as the Mustangs leading scorer with 80 points including 12 touchdowns. Taylor finished with 76 points, also including 12 touchdowns, Cotriss 68 including nine touchdowns, Austin 34 with four touchdowns, Barnes 24 with three touchdowns and Danny Brown 22 with three touchdowns.

Barna rushed for two of those touchdowns, Cotriss one and Hellwig hooked up with both Taylor and Austin for TD passes to key Medina to a 38-24 win over East Thursday in the Class B Consolation Bowl championship game. The contest saw the Mustangs offensive unti jump out to a 14-0 lead and then twice answer East scores with clutch touchdown drives to maintain command.

“That was big for us,” Valley said. “We’ve been emphasizing that we have to play four quarters and that when you keep working good things will happen and they did.”

Defensvely, the Mustangs had Adam Eick in on 77 tackles, Austin 75, Barna 73, Zach Newton 72, Barnes 47, Cotriss 40, Brett Pecoraro 37 and Tatylor 35. Talor also had 65 sacks and three interceptioss, Barna three sacks and two interceptions. Austin also had six sacks and Pecoraro 3.
