Wilson girls romp to Class B-2 title over Buffalo Arts

Medina Journal-Register — SANBORN - Making it three sectional titles in the last four years, top seeded Wilson rolled to a 58-34 victory over No. 2 Buffalo Arts in the Section VI Class B-2 championship game Saturday night at Niagara County Community College.

Dana Smith scored 16, Jamie Curry 15, Emily Lasher 10 and Kate Placek 8 to lead the balanced attack for Wilson which next faces B-1 champion Olean for th Section VI Class B berth in the state playoffs at 5 p.m. Tuesday at NCCC. Olean captured the B-1 title with a 46-30 win over East Aurora.

Smith also had 10 rebounds and 5 steals, Curry 7 rebounds, 6 steals and 7 assists, Placek 8 rebounds and 4 steals and Lasher 7 rebounds and 4 steals.

Andrea Zeigler shared game high honors with 16 for Arts.

Unleashing a balanced attack from the outset, Wilson jumped out to a 15-8 first period lead as Curry had two lay-ups off steals and a jumper, Placek back-to-back lay-ups, Smith the first of her four threes and Lasher a lay-up off a steal.

Keeping the momentum, Wilson more than doubled its lead to 18, 31-13, at the half after a 16-5 second period surge which featured baskets by five different players including a lay-up off a steal and a jumper by Curry and a rebound bucket and a jumper by Smith.

“We had a real good defensive effort in the first half. They really worked hard at it and created a lot of our offense off that defensive effort,” Wilson coach Brian Baker said. “We really smothered them defensively and the last couple of games that’s the way its been a lot of our offense has been because of our defense. We really played hard.”

The Wilson advantage soared to 26, 45-19, at the three-quarter mark as Smith hit two threes and Curry chipped in with another lay-up off a steal in the third period.

Wilson, which also captured the B-2 title in 2010 and 2011, takes a 20-1 record int the state qualifier.

“It’s nice to get it back after missing out last year,” said Baker whose Wilson squad lost in the 2012 B-2 title contest to Southwestern 40-27.
