Roy-Hart matmen win; Newfane tops Medina

Medina Journal-Register — MIDDLEPORT - Roy-Hart used the combination of a 57-27 victory over Albion with Newfane’s 49-28 win over visiting Medina Wednesday to move into a tie for the Niagara-Orleans League lead.

Roy-Hart improves to 4-1 and into a tie for the top spot with Akron which drew the bye a top the wild N-O title chase.

Medina slips to 4-2 as Newfane improves to 3-2.

Medina stayed within two at 30-28 after a decision win by Joe Velez (103) but Newfane claimed the final flour bouts on pins by Andrew Gelyon (120) and Cyrus Simons (132) along with decision wins by Paul Dunbar (126) and Nate Martin (138) to earn the key victory.

Medina’s last lead was at 25-24 after a decision win by Brennen Callara (99).

Earlier in the match the Mustangs got pins by Rob Wendt (160), Adam Eick (220) and Matt Montesanti (285) and a decision win by Leon Atkins (152).

However, Newfane countered with pins by Damon Taylor (145), Jake Kabula (170) , Jordan Brawley (182) and Josh Seib (195) during the sea-saw first half of the match.

Five pins registered by Tyler Choate (99), Zach Bickle (132), Drew Hull (145), Alex Jensen (220) and Clayton Smith (285) sparked Roy-Hart past Albion.

 Blake Aina (120) and Ed Narburgh (138) both notched pins for Albion which slips to 2-3

Roy-Hart combined a quick 41 second pin by Bickle with a second period fall by Hill, two forfeits and a decision win by Nick Burdick (152) to build up a 27-12 lead midway through the match.

Albion did rally into a brief 27-27 tie after two forfeits and a decision win by Ed Wolfe (180) but the Purple Eagles could not grab the lead.

Roy-Hart moved back out on top to stay at 33-27 with a forfeit win at 195. The Rams then quickly pulled away on a burst of three straight first period pins by Jensen in 28 seconds, Smith in 1:26 and Choate in 59 seconds.

In the other match, Barker (1-4) trimmed Wilson (0-5) 42-37 as David Gardner (145), Brandon Alt (182) and Hayden Hathaway (120) all registered pins.

Justin Stephenson (160), Chase Wheeler (170) and Brian Kerwin (220) all notched pins for Wilson.

Boys Basketball

Kendall 67, Attica 41

Kendall regained the .500 mark at 5-5 by defeating Attica 67-41 Wednesday in a Genesee Region League game.

Kevin Appleton scored 21 to lead the way for Kendall which held a 32-21 advantage at the half.
