AKRON —
Combining a very patient offense with a stingy defense Akron posted a 51-38 victory over Medina Friday to close out the Niagara-Orleans League season.
Austin Mietz scored 17 points to lead the offense for Akron which finishes the N-O season at 9-5 as the Tigers have won five of the last six.
Lucas Evans poured in a game high 20 points, including six threes, to pace Medina which winds up at 2-12 having lost 11 in a row.
Evans in fact accounted for all of Medina’s first half offense with four threes. His first three kept Medina even at 9-9 at the end of the first period. The fourth gave Medina what proved to be a brief 12-9 lead at the outset of the second period as the Mustangs failed to score again in the stanza.
Akron took advantage of that drought to close with a 13-0 lead, including two threes by Mietz and one by Noah Diebel, to move out to a 22-12 half-time advantage.
In all, nine of the 12 field goals made by the two teams in the first half were threes.
Three third period buckets by Mietz helped the Tigers extend the advantage to 14, 34-20, at the three-quarter mark.
The Akron lead ballooned to as much as 22, 45-23 midway through the final period.
