Medina Journal-Register — A big stretch run rally fell just short as Medina dropped a wild 84-82 decision to visiting Roy-Hart Friday in a Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball game.
Trailing by as many as 20 at the end of the first quarter, Medina gradually battled back with a barrage of three’s to slice the deficit to just one three times in the final period but could not pull even or grab the lead.
Brad Bobbitt scored a game high 27 points, Blake Copella netted 23 and Ryan Farewell 16 to spread the attack for Roy-Hart which improves to 2-0 in the league and 5-1 overall.
Jason Hellwig scored 21, Ryan Thompson 18, Lonnie Taylor 16 and Dan Brown 14 for Medina which blistered the nets for 15 three’s. Thompson and Hellwig both had six from long range.
The loss drops the Mustangs to 0-2 and 3-3 overall.
“They shot well. It seemed every three they put up found the mark but we hung in there enough to come away with the win,” Roy-Hart coach Mark Rydza said.
Copella tallied 13, including two three’s, and Bobbitt added eight to spark Roy-Hart out to a 20 point, 27-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
However, Medina began to rally in the second quarter sparked by four three’s by Thompson to cut the deficit in half, to 10 at 42-32 at the half.
Keeping the hot hand from outside, the Mustangs then got two three’s by Hellwig and one each by Brown, Thompson and Cedric Griffith in the third quarter to close to within seven, 64-57, at the three-quarter mark.
Hellwig then clicked on three more three’s in rapid fire fashion to pull Medina to within one, 70-69, at the four minute mark of the final period.
Taylor then scored on a lay-up to offset a Roy-Hart basket by Farewell to keep Medina within one at 72-71 but the Mustangs could not pull even.
Roy-Hart answered with some long-range fire power of its own on back-to-back three’s by Copella and Bobbitt to regain a seven point, 78-71 lead with 2:40 remaining.
However, Medina came battling back one last time with a 11-5 run on three lay-ups and a rebound bucket by Taylor followed by another three by Hellwig to again cut the deficit to just one at 83-82 with 12 seconds remaining.
Bobbitt then made one of two from the line giving Roy-Hart a 84-82 lead but Medina could not get the equalizer as a turnover with three seconds remaining dashed the Mustangs comeback hopes.
“Every time we pulled away they would make an important three to get back in it,” Rydza said. “Our kids worked hard though and we made some smart basketball plays at the end.”
Medina next hosts Newfane and Roy-Hart entertains Akron at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Wilson 50, Albion 46
ALBION - Building up leads of 17-10 after one quarter and 28-19 at the half, Wilson turned back a second half Albion comeback bid to earn a narrow 50-46 win.
Matt Baker scored 19 and Liam McIntosh 17, including five three’s, to lead the way for Wilson.
Albion, which outscored Wilson 27-22 in the second half, got 17 from Freddie Koester and 16 from Tre Allport.
Wilson is now 1-1 and Albion 0-2 in N-O action.
CSAT 75, Newfane 71
NEWFANE - Darnell Carson scored 35 and Dylanta Carson 27 to spark the attack for CSAT as Connor Sears netted 25 for Newfane.
Trailing 46-26 at the half, CSAT used a 21-12 third period surge to get back in the gar and a 28-16 fourth quarter spurt to claim the win.
CSAT improves to 2-0 and Newfane slips to 1-1.
Akron 42, Barker 39
BARKER - A scoreless third period prove costly as Barker dropped a narrow 42-29 decision to Akron.
Austin Meitz scored 13 to lead Akron which improves to 2-0.
Jacon Haight and Chris Sweeney each tallied nine for Barker which slips to 0-2.
Akron led 23-22 at the half and 29-22 after three quarters.
Pembroke 52,
Lyndonville 37
LYNDONVILLE - Austin Bane scored 18 points and Justin Edwards seven for Lyndonville in a 52-37 Genesee Region League loss to Pembroke Friday.
Pembroke led 28-16 at the half and 37-26 at the three-quarter mark after Lyndonville had jumped out to a 10-8 first quarter advantage.
