Medina Journal-Register — ALBION — The wide five-way log jam race for the Niagara-Orleans League wrestling title was broken up a bit Wednesday with victories by Medina, Akron and Roy-Hart.
Medina defeated host Wilson 48-36, Akron topped host Albion 48-36 and Roy-Hart downed visiting Newfane 39-34.
Those results leave Medina and Akron deadlocked for first place at 4-1 with Roy-Hart close behind at 3-1 as Albion and Newfane both slip to 2-2.
First period pins by Brennen Callara (99), Nick Doberstein (120), Nick Erway (126), Ben Howell (138) and Rob Wendt (152) sparked Medina to the victory.
Wilson, which drops to 0-4, got pins from Joe Brown (145), Chase Wheeler (160), Joe Stimm (170), Justin Stephenson (182) and Brian Kerwin (220).
Akron traded pins and forfeits throughout with Albion. The Tigers got pins from Matt Fiebelkorn (120), Garrett Schultz (152), Jordan Truglio (160, Davie Case (285) and John Fiebelkorn (99).
Aaron Burnside (132), Kyle McGaffick (145) and Trey Hart (160) all notched pins for Albion.
Both teams benefitted from three forfeit wins.
Rebounding from an early 18-0 deficit, Albion rallied into a 30-24 lead as Burnside and McGaffick both registered quick 35 second pins and Hart added a second period fall.
However, the last rally belonged to Akron which used back-to-back pins by Case and John Fiebelkorn to regain the lead for good at 42-36.
Roy-Hart was sparked by pins by Drew Hull (145), Travis Kelkenberg (170), Alex Jensen (220) and Clayton Smith (285).
The Rams also got decision wins by Jake Stern (113), Troy Lawson (120), Zack Bickle (126) and Cameron Swick (106) in the final bout which locked up the win.
Cyrus Simons (132), Damon Taylor (152) and Jordan Brawley (182) all notched pins for Newfane.
