Mustangs give Eagles a scare

Medina Journal-Register — Undefeated (8-0) front-running CSAT turned back a challenge from host Medina (1-7 ) Friday to claim a narrow 55-49 victory and maintain a two game lead a top the Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball standings.

In other N-O action, Roy-Hart (6-2) defeated visiting Wilson (1-7) 67-43, Newfane (6-2) downed Barker (3-5) 55-44 and Akron (6-2) topped Albion (1-7) 54-31.

Darnell Carson poured in 34 points to spearhead the CSAT attack.

Lonnie Taylor scored 20 and Adam Hoot 10 for Medina.

Carson scored nine quick points in the opening quarter to spark the Eagles out to a 12-8 lead.

Medina quickly pulled even at 12-12 at the out set of the second quarter after back-to-back lay-ups by Ben McPherson and Taylor but the Mustangs could not grab the lead.

Five more baskets by Taylor on two lay-ups, a pair of rebound baskets and a dunk did keep the Mustang within one, 28-27, at the half.

Carson tallied 11 points, including a pair of threes and a three-point play, to keep the Eagles on top by one.

The Eagles stretched their advantage to seven ,43-36, at the three-quarter mark after Medina went the first four and a half minutes of the third period without a basket.

A rebound bucket by Taylor at the outset of the final period pulled Medina within five, 43-38, but the Mustangs would get no closer.

CSAT answered with threes by Jorge Brown and Carson and a jumper by Carson to pull away to a 10 point, 52-42, advantage with 2:50 remaining.

Medina did pull back to within five one more time, 52-47, with 47 seconds to go after a lay-up off a steal by Taylor, a free throw by McPherson and a lay-up off a turnover by Dan Brown. However, CSAT again answered right back, this time with a big lay-up off a steal by Carson to put a lock on the victory.

Roy-Hart 67, Wilson 43

MIDDLEPORT - Ryan Farewll scored 20 and Alex Stoddard 15 to lead a parade of nine point-getters for Roy-Hart in the 67-43 win over Wilson.

Matt Baker led Wilson with 15.

Roy-Hart jumped out to an 18-5 first quarter lead and was never headed.

The Rams went on to lead by margins of 32-16 at the half and 54-29 at the three-quarter mark. Farwell and Stoddard both netted eight to highlight a 22 point third quarter uprising.

Newfane 55, Barker 44

BARKER - Improvng to 6-2, Newfane topped Barker (3-5) 55-44 as Connor Sears scored 16 to lead the way.

Jacob Haight took game high honors with 20 for Barker.

Newfane grabed a 16-10 first quarter advantage and went on to hold leads of 26-21 at the half and 40-33 at the three-quarter mark.

Akron 54, Albion 31

ALBION - Leading by a narrow 9-8 margin, Akron used a 16-5 second quarter scoring edge to key a 54-31 victory over Albion.

Austin Mietz led Akron with 16.

Tre Allport tallied 10 for Albion which trailed 25-13 at the half and 41-23 after three quarters.

Byron-Bergen 52, Lyndonville 47

LYNDONVILLE - Austin Bane scored 16 points and Patrick Hinkson 14, including four threes, for Lyndonville in the Tigers 52-47 Geensee Region League loss to Byron-Begen Friday.

Notre Dame 83, Holley 52

Kyle Bell had 23 points, 10 rebounds and five steals; Will Barniak 10 points and six rebounds and Sage Hodge 11 points and five assists for Holley in the 83-52 G-R loss to Notre Dame.

Kendall 48, Pembroke 31

Mookie Nauden had 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds; Devin Appleton and Dan Kelly nine points each to lead Kendall to a 48-31 G-R victory over Pembroke.
