ALBION —
Capping off an outstanding 2009-2010 school year of academic and athletic success, the Albion High athletic program recently earned two major honors — the New York State Public High School Athletic Association School of Distinction Award and the Niagara-Orleans League Supremacy Award.
It marks the second time in the last five years that Albion High has earned the School of Distinction honor and the eighth time the Purple Eagles have captured the N-O Supremacy trophy.
“It’s huge,” said Albion High Athletic Director Randy Knaak of the earning of the state School of Distinction Award. “It says that all of our varsity teams earned state Scholar/Athlete Awards (which requires a composite average of at least 90) and that really reflects very well on our student-athletes.
Albion is just one only 19 out of 782 high schools around the state to earn the coveted State Public High School Athletic Association’s School of Distinction Award.
“It’s a real compliment to the way our student/athletes put things in perspective and balance academically as well as athletically,” Knaak said. “But it is also the whole district that plays a part in achieving this so it’s really a district wide honor and we’re very pleased about it. It’s a great distinction for us.”
Albion put together a big spring season including league championships in baseball, softball, boys track and girls track to lock up the N-O Supremacy Award.
“We did have a very big spring season,” Knaak said. “But overall our athletes and our teams had a great year of success in N-O competition.”
Looking to keep that momentum, Albion has had a busy summer holding camps on campus in 12 of the Purple Eagles 17 varsity sports.
“We’ve had great participation,” said Knaak. “Our expectations are always high both academically and athletically and the key is our kids are driven to do that and our coaches are very dedicated and committed. It’s just a great situation to be in.”
