Purple Eagles 9 blanks Lions
Seniors Matt Quider and Travis Downs combined to pitch a two hitter leading Albion past Lockport 3-0 Wednesday in a non-league game.
Quider allowed one hit with five strikeouts over the first four innings and Downs gave up one hit with four strikeouts over the last three frames.
The Albion defense also provided strong support including turning a double play in the sixth inning from John Paige at shortstop to Steve Holler at second to Quider at first. Catcher Jon Warne also threw out a runner at third base in the third inning.
Offensively, Quider and Warne both banged out a pair of hits.
Albion broke a scoreless deadlock with a run in the fourth inning on singles by Warne and Elliott Foos and an error.
The Purple Eagles quickly made it 3-0 in the fifth inning as three walks loaded the bases setting the stage for a clutch two-run single by Warne.
Lockport’s biggest threat came in the first inning loading the bases on three walks. However, Quider bore down to register a key inning ending strikeout to quickly get out of the jam.
The Lions only two hits came on a third inning triple by Charlie Sobieraski and a sixth inning single by Kyle Covell.
Albion next hosts Alden at noon today in another non-league contest.
