Barker, Akron gain sectional finals

Medina Journal-Register — AMHERST - When it comes to meeting in the field hockey sectional finals Niagara-Orleans League rivals Barker and Akron are very familiar foes.

And both top seeded Barker and No. 3 Akron scored shut out victories in the semifinals Friday to earn a fifth straight meeting in the Class C finals at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Amherst. The Lady Raiders have defeated the Lady Tigers in all four of those previous meetings including a 3-0 win last fall.

Barker blanked No. 5 Newfane 6-0 and Akron shut out No. 2 Eden 2-0 in the semis.

Barker grabbed a 2-0 half-time lead on goals by Jessica Hefferon and Olivia Denny.

The Lady Raiders then broke the contest open with a lighting quick burst of two goals in less than a minute midday through the second half on tallies by Melissa Grosshans and Denny.

Denny completed her three goal hat-trick and Gaby Clare added a goal to round out the Barker scoring.

Akron got second half goals from Alisha Bell and Molly Jennings to oust Eden.

Boys Soccer

East Aurora 3, Newfane 1

Tonawanda 1, Akron 0

Niagara-Orleans League squads bowed in Section VI boys soccer championship games Saturday as top seeded East Aurora downed No. 2 Newfane 3-1 in the Class B-1 title contest and Tonawanda nipped Akron 1-0 in the B-2 final. Ryan Doyle scored Newfane’s goal off an assist from Patrick Eadie.

Girls Soccer

Section VI Class B finals

Akron 4, Eden 1

Paige Buscaglia scored two goals and Rielee Welch and Erika Papke one each to lead Akron past Eden 4-1 in the Class B championship game. The sectional title is the first for the Lady Tigers.

Buscaglia and Welch also each scored two goals in the semifinal  contest which saw Akron defeat Springville 5-1.

No. 2 Keshequa 3,

No. 3 Kendall 1

Nicole Broew screed the lone goal for No. 3 Kendall in the 3-1 Section V Class C semifinal loss to No. 2 Keshequa Thursday.

Volleyball

Host top seeded Hammondsport defeated No. 5 Lyndonville 25-7, 25-7, 25-7 Thursday in the semifinals of the Section V Class D playoffs.
