Purple Eagles roll over Medina 52-28 in N-O opener
Leading from wire to wire, Albion opened defense of its Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball championship Tuesday by downing host Medina, 52-28.
In other N-O opening night action, Royalton-Hartland defeated Barker 49-30, Akron downed Newfane 48-37 and Wilson romped past CSAT 85-30.
Paige Golden scored 12 points, Abby Edwards nine and Casey Button and Chelsea Beecher eight each to lead a balanced attack for Albion which also unleashed a strong, stingy defense.
“That was our main focus to play strong defense and we did some nice things defensively,” Albion coach Melody Beecher said. “And getting balanced scoring was the other focus. We’re looking for every one to contribute and they did.”
Maggie Balcerzak took game high scoring honors for Medina with 13.
Albion took control at the outset jumping out to a 15-2 first quarter lead as Edwards had a three-point shot and a lay-up, Golden two lay-ups and Beecher a jumper and a lay-up.
Two jumpers by Taylor Armstrong and one by Golden in the second quarter helped keep Albion up by 13, 25-12, at the half.
Getting baskets from five different players, the Purple Eagles opened up a 22 point, 39-17 lead at the three-quarter mark.
Now at 3-1 overall, Albion next hosts Roy-Hart and Medina travels to CSAT Friday.
Roy-Hart 49, Barker 30
MIDDLEPORT — Jenna Harrington scored 15 points, Jesse DeWaters 14 and Kim Harrington 12 to lead the way for Roy-Hart, which used a 13-3 second period surge to pull away.
Kim Harrington also had seven steals and six rebounds, Jenna Harrington 10 rebounds and DeWaters six assists.
Roy-Hart led 28-15 at the half and 43-25 at the three-quarter mark.
Aileen Hinton led Barker with 11 points.
Akron 48, Newfane 37
AKRON — Lindsey Schmid scored 17 of her game high 19 points in the second half, including making good on 11 of 13 free throw attempts, to rally Akron from a 23-16 half-time deficit to a 48-37 victory over Newfane.
Gus Hallett-Jonathan added 15 points for Akron. Liz Geise scored 12 and Haley Weber 11 for Newfane.
Wilson 85, CSAT 30
WILSON — Lindsey Frauen scored 17 points, Jessica Curry 14 and Molly Curry 10 to lead Wilson to the romp over CSAT.
Wilson led 44-19 at the half.
