N-O cagersset to begin season

Medina Journal-Register — The chase for the Niagara-Orleans League boys and girls basketball championships is set to begin with a total of eight games over the next two days.

Tonight the boys games will have Medina at CSAT and Newfane at Barker while the girls contests will include CSAT at Medina, Wilson at Roy-Hart in an interesting match-up of defending co-champions and Barker at Newfane, all at 6:30 p.m.

Then tomorrow evening Albion will host Akron at 7 p.m. in the lone girls contest while the two boys games will have Albion at Akron and Roy-Hart at Wilson at 6:30 p.m.

Last year rivals Wilson and Newfane shared the boys title with identical 11-3 records with Akron and CSAT both finishing two games off the pace at 9-5.

The girls also finished with co-champions as Wilson and Roy-Hart shared the crown with identical 12-2 records. Albion finished two games back at 10-4 and Medina three games off the pace at 9-5.

The Medina girls are off to a 2-0 start in non league competition as Alba Perez, a first team N-O All-League honoree last year, is leading the way with an 18.5 per game scoring average.

Defending co-champions Roy-Hart and Wilson also each return a first team All-League honoree. The Lady Rams return senior Olivia Kelkenberg and the Lady Lakemen senior Jamie Curry.

On the boys side, a trio of first team All-League honorees return including Barker junior Jacob Haight, Roy-Hart senior Brad Bobbitt and CSAT senior Darnell Carson. Haight is off to a strong start having scored 40 points and grabbing 20 rebounds in Barker’s 80-70 win at Elba Tuesday as the Raiders are off to a 4-0 start.

The Medina boys squad is 0-2 in non league action as senior Lonnie Taylor is leading the Mustangs in scoring with a 20 point average.
