Mustang grapplers edge past Rams

Medina Journal-Register — In a tight see-saw battle Medina edged past visiting Roy-Hart 39-34 Wednesday to improve to 3-1 in Niagara-Orleans League wrestling competition.

In other N-O action, Albion defeated visiting Barker 51-28 and Akron topped host Wilson 63-18.

Late decision wins by Matt Montesanti (285) and Joe Velez (106) sandwiched around a pin by Brennen Callara (99) provided the margin of victory for Medina in the match which saw no less than eight lead changes.

“It was tough,” Medina coach Eric Goss said. “We had a couple of kids step up. Joe’s win was a real big one and so was Matt’s. There are always things to work on and improve upon but overall I’m pleased.”

Travis Kelkenberg (182) and Alex Jensen (220) both registered pins for Roy-hart who slips to 2-1.

Medina jumped out to a 6-0 lead at the outset on a first period pin by Nick Erway (120).

Roy-Hart though answered with consecutive decision wins by Troy Lawson (126), Zach Bickle (132) and William Jensen (138) to move into a 10-7 lead and the sea-saw battle was on.

Medina moved back on top at 15-10 after a forfeit win at 145 and a decision win by Stormi Kruger (152).

The lead then changed hands after each of the next six bouts after a flurry of pins. In rapid fire fashion it was Roy-Hart 16-15 after a forfeit win at 160, Medina  21-16 after a second period pin by Rob Wendt (170), Roy-Hart 22-21 after a first period pin by Kelkenberg, Medina 27-22 after a sub minute pin by Charles Beach, Roy-Hart 28-27 after a first period pin by Alex Jensen and finally Medina regained the upper hand for good at 30-28 after a decision win by Montesanti.

A first period pin by Callara gave Medina a little breathing room at 36-28 and then Velez scored the clincher with a narrow 10-6 decision win for an unbeatable 39-28 Mustangs lead.

Albion 51, Barker 28

ALBION — Ed Narburgh (138), Kyle McGaffick (145), Greg Blank (160), Tre Hart (170), Ed Wolfe (182) and Dylan Burkhardt (220) all registered pins to lead the way for Albion.

Brett Bachman (99), Jonathan Page (152) and Lukas Hanssen (285) all notched pins for Barker which drops to 0-4.

Wilson 63, Wilson 18

WILSON - Akron registered seven pins to key the victory over Wilson and stay in a tie for first place with Medina at 3-1.

John Fieblekorn (99), Ethan PeQueen (120), Jared Siska (126), Garrett Schultz (152), Jordan Trugilio (160), Adrian Ross (170) and Joe Sauro (182) all notched pins for the Tigers.
