Montesanti repeats as sectional champ

Medina Journal-Register — AMHERST - Medina High senior Matt Montesanti (285) successfully defended his Section VI title by nipping Roy-Hart’s Clayton Smith 1-0 in the championship match Sunday night at the University at Buffalo’s Alumni Arena.

Montesanti, who also edged past Smith in both the recent Niagara-Orleans League and Section VI Class C tournament finals, made a lone point earned via a second period escape stand up for the victory and a return trip to the state championships.

“Matt is steady and keeps the pace of the match up at a good rate and he doesn’t back down, he keeps after it,” Medina coach Eric Gross said. “He know’s what he ha to do and he sticks to the game plan.”

Montesanti decisioned David Case (Akron) 3-1 in the quarterfinals and Javen Newman (Falconer) 5-0) in the semifinals.

Roy-Hart’s Drew Hull captured the Section VI 145 pound title nipping Jude Gardner (Fredonia) 1-0 in a rematch of the previous week’s Class C finals.

Roy-Hart also had a second place finisher in Cameron Swick at 106.

Holley’s Mike Silvis (220) dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to Zach Bacon (Hornell) in the championship match of the Section V state qualifier Sunday at SUNY Brockport.

Silvis opened with a lightning quick 18 second pin and then decisioned Scott Dunham (Waterloo 9-1 in the quarterfinals and John Martisch (Penn Yan) 5-3 in the semifinals.

Holley’s Andrew Flanagan earned third place honors with a 4-1 decision win over Dane Heberlein (Alexander).

Flanagan scored a 15-1 major decision win over Connor Wilkins (Livonia) in the quarterfinals but was nipped 7-6 in triple overtime in the semis by Hunter Olena (East Rochester) who went on to win the weight class.

Holley also had Alan White (120) and Martin Bedle (132) both place fourth and San Beadle (138) and Kevin Avery (145) fifth.

Kendall’s Averey Iqbal (106) also placed fourth.

Lyndonville’s Tony Recco was unable to defend his Section V title as an injury prevented him from competing.
